As the federal election quickly approaches, it is Nova Vita’s hope that anyone looking to form government in Canada would share our concerns and have actionable plans ready to address the issue of gender-based violence in our country.
The National Plan to End Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Canada is a strategic framework aimed at creating a country free from gender-based violence by addressing its root causes, supporting victims and survivors, and fostering collaboration across federal, provincial, and territorial governments. It emphasizes prevention, responsive justice systems, and culturally appropriate services to ensure safety and equality for all.
With this plan in mind, and as candidates attend events, knock on your doors or participate in debates, we have compiled a list of helpful questions to ask candidates, to ensure the good work to end gender-based violence continues.
Here are some ways that you can start the conversation with candidates:
On Prevention
Prevention focuses on tackling gender-based violence at its roots – challenging harmful social norms, promoting gender equity, and educating communities: “How will you invest in education and public awareness campaigns to address the root causes of gender-based violence and prevent it before it happens?”
On Justice System Responses
Many survivors struggle to seek justice due to systemic challenges like lack of gender-based violence training for police and judges, lengthy legal processes, and fear of retaliation: “How will you work to improve the justice system’s approach to gender-based violence cases and reduce barriers for survivors seeking justice?”
On Social & Economic Supports
Financial insecurity and lack of housing can trap individuals in abusive situations: “What policies would you push to improve financial security and housing access for those impacted by gender-based violence?”
